Learn to plan, build, test and deploy modern software.
The B Learning Centre Software Developer Programme is a practical route into junior full-stack web development. It combines structured technical training, assessed portfolio work, tutor support, career preparation and a guaranteed 12-week work placement.
Programme structure
The programme contains 400 hours of learning: 320 hours of structured training and 80 hours of assessed project work. Learners use TypeScript, React, Node.js, Express and PostgreSQL throughout the programme.
What you will learn
- Programming foundations: logic, functions, clean code and problem solving.
- HTML, CSS and accessibility: responsive interfaces for desktop and mobile.
- Modern JavaScript: the DOM, events, asynchronous code, APIs and application logic.
- TypeScript and object-oriented programming: types, classes, interfaces and maintainable design.
- Algorithms and data structures: arrays, stacks, queues, maps, searching and sorting.
- React: components, state, routing, forms and data fetching.
- Node.js and Express: server-side JavaScript, routing and business logic.
- APIs, authentication and security: REST, validation, sessions, JWT and OWASP basics.
- Databases: PostgreSQL, SQL, schema design and NoSQL concepts.
- Testing and debugging: unit, integration and end-to-end testing.
- Git, Agile and the software development lifecycle: branches, pull requests, user stories and teamwork.
- Deployment and DevOps: CI/CD, Docker basics, cloud hosting and monitoring.
Assessed portfolio projects
- An accessible, responsive business website.
- A React data application with routing, state and an external API.
- A secure Node.js and Express API with PostgreSQL, authentication and tests.
- A deployed full-stack capstone with documentation, CI/CD and a technical presentation.
Assessment also includes weekly coding challenges, code reviews, refactoring, automated testing, a capstone demonstration and a technical interview.
Guaranteed 12-week work placement
After the training and assessed projects, learners move into a guaranteed 12-week work placement. The placement is designed to produce evidence that can be discussed accurately with employers, including:
- real tickets and user stories;
- Git branches and pull requests;
- code review and testing evidence;
- technical documentation; and
- a deployment or release contribution.
The placement is guaranteed, but employment is not. Hiring decisions remain with individual employers.
Entry-level career routes
The main career target is Junior Full-Stack Web Developer. Related routes include Junior Developer, Junior Front-End Developer, Junior Back-End Developer and Graduate Software Engineer. Indicative UK starting salaries generally range from £25,000 to £42,000 depending on the role, employer, location, portfolio and previous experience. Salary figures are guidance, not guarantees.
